Known together with Gili Ringgit, Gili Asahan and Gili Layan as the Secret Gilis (The Secrets Gili), Gili Gede is a small paradise for lovers of tranquility and few tourist sites. If your idea is to visit Lombok and you are looking for more alternative destinations, Gili Gede is an ideal option.
Gili Gede is accessible both from Lombok and from nearby islands such as Gili Trawangan, Nusa Lembongan, Nusa Penida or Bali itself. From Lombok, local boats depart from the port of Tembowong to Gede. These boats do not have a fixed schedule, they leave depending on the people who are waiting from 7 am to 5 pm approximately. The price of the journey is 25,000 IDR and it only takes about 20 minutes.
From Nusa Lembongan or Nusa Penida there are fast boats or speedboats that make the route from Bali and finish the route in Gili Trawangan. For more information see the following link for more information on prices and schedules.

From Gili Gede to Bali by Ferry
To get back to Bali from Gili Gede you don’t need to go back up north of Lombok. Right next to the secret islands is the Port of Lembar and from there you can catch a ferry that will take you to the Kuta part of southern Bali or to Padangbai in eastern Bali . This is the cheapest option. The trip only costs 40,000 IDR (3 euros) although the trip lasts 5 hours.
From Gili Gede to Bali by Fastboat
In the same Port of Lembar you will find people offering to go to Bali (or the other Gili Islands) in a fast boat (Fastboat). After the plane, it is the fastest way to get around Indonesia but also the most expensive. It usually costs IDR 650,000 (40 euros) per person for a one-way trip. The journey is 2 hours.
From Gili Gede to Bali by plane
The last option is to go to Lombok International Airport and take a flight that leaves you in Bali or any other destination that you have in your travel plans. Flights from Lombok to Bali usually cost around 20-30 euros.
Gili Gede Island is about 4 km long so one can spend a few hours going around the whole island to discover the life of the locals and find some even more secret and special place. The majority of the local population is Muslim and they live mainly from fishing and livestock. For the Spanish, it will undoubtedly be very curious to see cattle right next to the beach. As an anecdote, I ran around the entire island. Calmly, stopping from time to time to take photos and enjoy the scenery and it didn’t take me more than 1h30.
It is advisable to bathe with slippers since the shore is full of coral and, as we could see at night when the tide goes out, full of sea urchins; so you have to be careful where you put your feet.
WHAT TO DO IN GILI GEDE DURING YOUR DAYS OF VISIT
Located south of Lombok , Gili Gede is a small island just over 4 km long with less than 1,000 inhabitants. Not being as well known as its neighbors Gili Trawangan , Gili Air and Gili Meno , the island is still very undeveloped. As in the rest of Lombok, the local population is Muslim, with fishing, artisanal drying of fish and cattle raising being their most important means of livelihood.
Gili Gede is a paradise for those who do not like to do anything and take things very easy. In your days on the island you will be able to discover places of interest such as the following.
ORONG BUKA VILLAGE
Although there are five villages on Gili Gude, the main nucleus of the island is Orong Buka Village, right in the center of the island. As a point of interest, its small mosque (Masjid Nurul Hikmah) and, above all, its relaxed atmosphere stand out. Here you can enjoy the local cuisine in its small waroung or local restaurants, especially fresh fish of the day.
EXPLORE THE INTERIOR OF THE ISLAND
Gili Gede is ideal for touring and getting to know its interior, especially the northernmost part of the island. In the interior of the island you can enjoy beautiful palm groves and mangrove areas on the coast.
VISIT THE OTHER SECRET GILI
The main excursion that can be done in Gede is a private tour to see the nearby Gili Ringgit, Gili Asahan and Gili Layan, the other Secret Gili. These excursions are hired on the beach of Orong Buka and the prices usually vary between 200,000 and 250,000 IDR for a tour for a maximum of 4 people.
There are not many options to eat in Gili Gede, some warungs and restaurants with local food with good price.
